For the past 20 years McAlester High school has hosted the McAlester Invitational.

This type of tournament gives the wrestlers a lot of mat time (experience). Un-like traditional tournament brackets, were a competitor gets eliminated after losing. The invitational gives fair competition to all who compete, based on a point system.

The first day of competition was a round robin style tournament were the wrestlers competed in a pool of six. In each pool of wrestlers, the two best scores advanced into the seeded bracket to wrestle on Saturday for the medals.

Most wrestlers had five matches on Friday and those that advanced to the second day of competition were guaranteed two matches Saturday.

Each wrestler had to prove his worth to get seeded into medal contention.

Pat Rochell pinned four out of five opponents in the 103 pound class. Rochell had a technical fall victory in his third match Friday. He advanced to the championship bracket. Rochell started with 12.5 points for the buffs going into Saturday’s championship bracket.

Anthony Colbert was in the consolation bracket with a pin in his second match in the 112 pound weight class.

Chase Edwards also received a pin in his second match Friday afternoon. Edwards advanced to the championship bracket for the Buffs in the 119 pound weight class.

In the 125 pound division, Clint Redding went on to championship bracket while Arturo Riestra made the consolation round, to represent the Buffs.

Britton Roberts won all five of his matches with two wins being major decisions in his first and last match on Friday. Roberts pinned three of his opponents in the 130 pound weight class. Roberts advanced to the championship bracket on Saturday.

Aaron skinner had a tough day Friday facing skilled opponents from Ada, Coweta, and Poteau. Skinner went onto the consolation round in the 135 pound weight class.

Matt Edgerton had three pins going into the second day of the tournament. Edgerton advanced to the championship bracket in the 140 pound weight class.

Kydel Billy started out his first two matches with pins. Billy advanced to the championship round in the 145 pound weight class.

In the 152 pound weight class – the Buffs advanced two wrestlers into the championship bracket – James Teel and Chris Skinner. Teel advanced with two pins and Skinner with one pin on their first day of competition. Both wrestlers went into Saturday shooting for the gold.

Alan Stasny (AJ) had his word cut out in his weight class. Stansny started out in the consolation bracket in the 160 pound weight class.

The buffs had a trio of 171 pound contenders advance Friday. Chris Korp and Josh Carney both advanced to the championship bracket, while Aaron Hester was seeded in the consolation bracket going into the second day. Korp pinned four of his five opponents Friday.

Carney has turned his power into skill, pinning three of his opponents on Friday.

Cody Runyon put out a great effort Friday and came up short to get a bracket spot for Saturday’s part of the tournament for the 189 pound weight class.

Shane Spence advanced to the consolation bracket in the 215 pound weight class.

Agapito Riestra made the consolation bracket for the 285 pound weight class.

The final tournament results will be inside the Monday edition of the McAlester News-Capital.
