Oklahoma City — The Buffs made a name for themselves at the state tournament.
McAlester tennis traveled to the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association Class 5A State tennis tournament at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center on Friday, where the Buffs battled their way against the competition.
Senior Rhylan Riddel opened his journey as the Buffs’ 1 Singles player against Noel Guitierrez from Southeast, with Riddel taking the win in two sets (6-0, 6-1) to advance to the quarterfinal round.
The 1 Doubles duo of Chris Whaley and Alex Jurkiewicz battled against their counterparts from Duncan, with the Buffs falling to the Demons in two sets (6-1, 6-0).
The pair of Buffs next faced their counterparts from Lawton Eisenhower, where Whaley and Jurkiewicz wrapped up their season at the state tournament.
In the final Friday match for McAlester Riddel next faced Cascia Hall’s James Benien, who took the win as Riddel moved into the consolation side of the bracket.
Riddel opened up Saturday’s second day of competition against Lawton MacArthur’s Christian Shoemate. Riddel made quick work, winning in two sets (6-2, 6-2) to advance to the next round.
In that match, Riddel battled against Ada’s Halston Redwine — falling to the eventual fifth-place winner. Riddel next faced off against Jesse Choplin from Claremore, where Riddel rounded out his tournament with an eighth-place finish.
