Savanna 33, Talihina 6: Talihina punched first. Savanna took it, punched back, and kept punching until it had beaten Talihina to the ground.
“They played hard, fast, and up front got it done,” Savanna coach James Bond said Saturday.
Talihina went up 6-0 on a touchdown run with 4:08 left in the first, but Savanna responded a couple minutes later, with Christian Preston scoring on a 49-yard touchdown run. Preston then ran in another from 7 yards out with 10:05 left in the second.
Preston added a 20-yard touchdown pass to Jimmy Sparks midway through the second. Chase Wood capped the first-half scoring with a 30-yard fake punt that he took all the way to the end zone.
Savanna only scored once in the third, but the touchdown — a 1-yard run from Preston — finished an 87-yard drive that chewed up over six minutes of playing time. Lineman Kane Konsure set that drive up by recovering a fumble.
Because of last week’s loss to district-leader Gore, Savanna will need Talihina’s help to win the district. Savanna plays Central Sallisaw next week with a first-round home playoff game on the line, while Talihina plays Gore.
