Sean McKelvey, a 42-year-old attorney at Steidley-Neal in McAlester, unofficially started McAlester United in the spring of 2010. His oldest son, Brayden, had tried baseball and basketball, but neither sport seemed to meet his athletic needs like soccer did.

“It was the only sport he really took to,” McKelvey said Tuesday.

“We’d go outside and kick the soccer ball around. It was a way for him and I to connect and have a good time.”

So to give his son —and his younger son Camden and daughter Jadyn — a proper outlet, he started a soccer team in McAlester. That one team grew into three teams, then six teams.

McAlester United officially formed in August 2011.
