Defense led the way for McAlester in another district win.

Eric McCarty and Killian Barnes each returned an interception for a touchdown and Chase Faber recovered a fumble to help the Buffs take a 40-0 win Friday against Glenpool at Hook Eales Stadium in District 5A-3 action.

McAlester allowed just 41 total yards and Mazey credited defensive coordinator Kevin Harmon, the defensive staff and the players.

"(The players) are learning that if they execute what we tell them to do, even offensively, when they do what we ask them to do and they do it to the full extent of their abilities then they're fine," Mazey said.

McAlester (4-4, 4-2) could have clinched a playoff spot with a win Friday against Glenpool (2-7, 1-5) if Ada lost at Tulsa Hale (2-6, 0-6) — but the Cougars (4-4, 3-3) took a 42-6 win.

The Buffs play at Bishop Kelley next week with a win clinching second place and a loss leading to multiple scenarios.

"We have to play well, we're going to have to be on our A-game, we're going to be physical," Mazey said.

After the Buffs forced a punt on Glenpool’s opening drive, senior quarterback Chris Hilton connected with junior receiver Jaxon Walters for a 58-yard touchdown pass for a six-point lead after the two-point try failed less than four minutes into the game.

Glenpool converted on a fourth down on the following drive before the Buffs got three consecutive tackles for a loss to force a punt. However, McAlester went three-and-out on the drive as the teams traded punts.

After stalling on the first two downs of a drive, Hilton connected with junior receiver Gavin Johnson for an 86-yard touchdown pass early in the second.

A sideline warning on the play backed up the extra-point attempt, but a Glenpool pass interference on the try moved the ball forward before Hilton made the extra-point kick for a 13-0 lead with 10:21 before halftime.

Johnson got another score on the following drive with a 35-yard touchdown reception from Hilton and the two-point try failed as McAlester took a 19-0 lead with 7:22 in the second.

McAlester finished the first half with 203 passing yards and 26 rushing yards for 229 total. Johnson had 121 receiving yards and two touchdowns before the half.

The Buffs also held Glenpool to just four total yards in the half. Glenpool had 17 passing and negative-13 rushing yards before the break.

McAlester added another score midway through the third when freshman Erik McCarty returned an interception 49 yards for a touchdown. The point-after kick was good for a 26-0 lead.

Buffs linebacker Chase Faber recovered a fumble on the following drive, but McAlester's offensive drive stalled.

But Hilton got McAlester back on the board with a two-yard touchdown run for a 33-0 lead with 5:22 left the play.

Barnes later returned an interception 38 yards for a touchdown for what became the final score.
