The McAlester High School Wrestling team had their season opener Tuesday night in front of a large crowd gathered at Bob Brumley Gymnasium.

The Ft. Gibson Tigers walked away from the gym with a 56-21 win, but the Buffs had four individual winners.

“We really did the best in the middle weights,” said wrestling coach Brent Grilliot.

Chase Woodley, at 125, Britton Roberts, 130, and Trevor Contreras, 135, recorded three straight wins for the Buffs.

Ricky Perry later was the winner at 215.

“A lot of good and bad things came out of it,” said Grilliot. “The event had as good a crowd as we’ve ever had.

“The Jr. High wrestlers really had a tight match, they didn’t win, but it was close.”

Fans there to cheer on the wrestlers and a group from Angie’s Dance watched for free, after Tim Bruffett bought out the gymnasium, allowing anyone from the community to come support the Buffs at home matches this season.

Up next for the Buffs will be a road trip to the Okmulgee Invitational this Saturday.

“We are hoping to make some progress this week,” said Grilliot. “We are looking forward to this weekend.”
