Sammy Luker is going to the next level.
The Stuart senior traded in his Hornet green for Eagle blue as he signed his commitment to play college basketball for Southwestern Christian University in Bethany on Thursday morning during a signing ceremony at the school.
Family, friends, and members of the Hornets basketball team gathered into the library and looked on as Luker took a deep breath and committed himself to play at the collegiate level.
“It’s exciting. I’m kind of nervous, but I think I’m making the right decision,” Luker said. "I know the coaches are great and it’s a good school. I’m really excited.”
Luker said he began to build a relationship with the school when he met the coaches during the past summer. He said that they told him about SCU, the basketball program, and all of the things the school offers, and he was interested in finding out more.
Luker said that after he made an official visit and attended a workout, he knew that he wanted to be a part of the Eagle family. He praised how easily the connection with the coaches developed, and how that helped lead him to make the life-changing choice.
“They offered me some scholarship money and it just seemed like a good fit,” Luker said. “I’m just really happy with the way things turned out.”
Not only is he excited to get to advance his basketball career as well as his education, Luker said he was honored and humbled that he got to make his pledge to play in college in front of the people who have been behind him every step of the way.
“It means a lot to know that all these people care enough to come out here and celebrate this big day with me,” Luker said. “It’s pretty cool."
