THUMBS UP to being a little artistic and supporting a worthwhile cause at the same time. The Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma will hold a painting fundraiser Saturday and Sunday.
The event will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at The Art Spot, 210 E. Choctaw Ave.
Participants will learn how to paint or glaze bowls. The bowls will be used at the Empty Bowls South event Sept. 26. The bowls serve as a reminder there are many hungry Oklahomans.
The cost is only $3.
Far too many people in our community and across southeastern Oklahoma do not get enough food. This event sounds fun even if it weren’t in support of such a worthy cause.
The event is low cost, family friendly fun that will raise funds for hungry Oklahomans.

THUMBS UP to Life Church members for their dedication and effort to make McAlester a better place.
Members volunteer for projects monthly across McAlester in an effort call “I Love My City.”
Life Church members recently were among 50 volunteers who helped prepare Hook Eales Stadium for the upcoming high school football season.
Members have helped prepare Parker Intermediate for the start of school — painting classrooms, cleaning lockers and scraping gum — among other projects around McAlester.
We’re grateful for the effort of Life Church members in service of the community.
There are multiple opportunities for volunteers to help improve the quality of life for someone in McAlester.
We encourage participation in fundraisers — some come with a little sweat and hard work, some are more laid back. Some fundraisers are activities such as Bingo nights.
But all need good people — such as those at Life Church — to make the events and projects successful.
We encourage you to find what touches your heart and make an effort to make McAlester a better place for all.

THUMB UP to Southeastern Oklahoma Social Services for its Sock Drive to help students with socks and underwear.
The drive is ongoing through Sept. 15. Donations may be dropped off at 512 E. Chickasaw or mail donations to P.O. Box 3655, McAlester, OK 74502. Monetary donations may be made through PayPal.
More than 300 packages were distributed last year. The drive started three years ago with an invitation on social media. Since then, the drive has grown each year.
It’s wonderful to see someone see a need and try to fill that need. Jennifer Barnes did not want children to go without basics such as socks or underwear.
Her dedication has led to expanding the drive to include Shared Blessings, Hope House and the men’s and youth shelters.
Communities members should look out for each other. We applaud the dedication.
