The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said a suspect is dead following a Wednesday evening pursuit that ended with shots being fired.
One trooper was treated on scene by medics for minor injuries after he was struck by shrapnel that was stopped by his vest.
The identities of the injured trooper or the suspect that was killed were not available.
OHP Public Information Officer Sarah Stewart said Troopers with Troop D were informed by the McAlester Police Department of a pursuit traveling south on U.S. Highway 69.
MPD Capt. Don Hass said officers were in pursuit of an alleged shoplifting suspect.
”Multiple OHP units responded,” said Stewart.
The pursuit continued to the Indian Nation Turnpike when the driver of the vehicle turned back north towards McAlester in the southbound lane. The pursuit ended at the intersection of South Third Street and South Avenue in McAlester.
“Shots were ultimately fired by patrol personnel and the driver of the fleeing vehicle was struck and pronounced dead,” said Stewart.
This is a developing story and more information will be released when it is obtained.
