A project is being launched for those who want to partner with the McAlester Old Town Association in acquiring the historic J.J. McAlester home — the residence is where the city’s founder and namesake once lived in what is now known as Old Town.

In conjunction with the city’s upcoming sesquicentennial celebration, the Old Town Association is launching the “YOUR HOME McAlester” community shareholder campaign to acquire the J. J. McAlester mansion.

“We have multiple objectives: preserving the legacy of our city’s founder, J.J. McAlester, by transforming portions of the home into a McAlester Family and McAlester History Museum; to provide a new unique venue for all types of special events to include community and civic programs, weddings, school class and family reunions to name just a few; and to join the McAlester Home with the Tannehill Museum, the Tobucksy Courthouse, and all of the antique shops, restaurants and other businesses to the tourism and economic offerings of Old Town McAlester,” said Brenda Baxter, President of the Old Town Association.

The “YOUR HOME McAlester” campaign will be a community-wide effort allowing individuals, organizations, business and industry to invest as shareholders at different levels. It will also include a variety of shareholder benefits to allow the McAlester Old Town Association to become the new owner of the J.J. McAlester Mansion, said association members.

The campaign will officially launch in mid-January at which time all shareholder and campaign materials will be made available, more detail project plans rolled out, and opportunities for further community input and questions are to made available.

The Old Town Association has engaged Strategic Fundraising Partners to serve as the primary lead on all aspects of this campaign.

With the official mid-January launch, it is a primary objective of the Old Town Association to have the funds in-hand in order to present the deed to the J.J. McAlester mansion to the McAlester Old Town Association during some special McAlester Sesquicentennial Celebrations during mid-April, with a subsequent shareholder event to be held later in 2019.
