McAlester Public Schools Board of Education voted to hire Mark Price, of McAlester, as the certified band director for the 2018-19 school year.
“I asked the board to approve the employment of Mark Price as our band director for 2018-19 school year and hopefully many years to come,” MPS Superintendent Randy Hughes said.
The motion was made by seat 2 board member Mike Sossamon and the motion was approved unanimously.
In October, McAlester High School Band Director David Steidley announced his retirement as the school’s band director after 19 years.
The McAlester band program has delivered many championship performances over the past 19 years and has won top honors against other bands from surrounding states in the Renegade Review, as well as the Bixby band contest, the OSSAA championships and the Oklahoma Bandmasters contests. The band has also received 11 State Sweepstakes Awards.
Price said he is currently one of the assistant band directors and has been assisting at MHS for eight years and feels comfortable in taking over the leading role.
“Jobs like this don’t come open very often — I feel excited and fortunate to have this opportunity,” Price said. “I also feel comfortable and ready as ever to take over.”
Price added he feels honored to lead the MPS band program and plans to uphold the standards that have been established by Steidley and other former band directors.
“I plan to uphold the standards placed by Mr. Steidley, but I also hope to start new ones,” Price said.
Price said he feels very comfortable with the marching band ensemble since he has been working with Steidley and the marching band for five years.
“I want to raise the bar of expectation for the kids and come up with new ideas and also try to be more innovative with the marching band,” Price said.
Price added one of his goals is to have the largest 5A band program in the state of Oklahoma.
“Right now we are in the top six or seven, but I want to get us to the largest band program in the state,” he said.
Price wanted to thank the MHS administration for the opportunity and also thank Steidley for being his mentor.
“Mr. Steidley has been a great friend and mentor to me over the last few years,” Price said.
Price said he also thanks his wife and children for their support.
“My family has been very supportive of me and they have had to sacrifice a lot their time with me,” Price said. “Thank you.”
