The McAlester Regional Wellness Center was among eight Oklahoma projects that received recognition in the 2005 Excellence in Interior Design competition.

The competition is sponsored by the Oklahoma Chapter of the American Society of Interior Design.

A First Place award went to Heidi Roberts, an ASID member with Tulsa based Dewberry Design Inc., for her interior design of the wellness center.

“It was a neat project,” Roberts said. “It was a privilege working in McAlester.”

Roberts said the award is an honor for her and her company, and she feels it is also beneficial to McAlester and the wellness center.

Each of the eight awards were based on a number of judging points. Projects had to achieve the required level to garner an award.

The competition is judged by members of an out-of-state ASID chapter.

In order to become a member of ASID, designers must meet specific educational and experience requirements, including the two-day National Council for Interior Design Qualification examination.

“In other words, the title ‘Excellence in Design’ is not easily achieved, even in an organization where membership designation is not easily given,” Oklahoma ASID President Denna Holmes told CNHI.
