File photo by KEVIN HARVISONMiss McAlester Julia Wynn is shown in this file photo greeting students at McAlester Public Schools. Applicants are currently being sought for the upcoming Miss McAlester and Miss McAlester Outstanding Teen Scholarship Pageants which will be held in June at S. Arch Thompson Auditorium.

Time is nearing for the next Miss McAlester and Miss McAlester Outstanding Teen Scholarship Pageants and the directors are ready for contestants.

The Miss McAlester Pageant is for contestants from ages 17-to-24, while the Miss Outstanding Teen Pageant is for girls ages 13-to-17. Contestants must live within a 40-mile radius of McAlester.

Whoever wins the Miss McAlester Pageant is eligible to enter the Miss Oklahoma Pageant in June, which is a precursor to the annual Miss America Pageant.

May 29 is the entry deadline for the Miss McAlester and Miss McAlester Outstanding Teen Scholarship Pageants. Both pageants will be held at 7 p.m. on June 20 at S. Arch Thompson Auditorium in McAlester.

“This year’s theme is ‘A Starry Night in Paris,’” said Lori Few, who  is co-director of the pageants along with Jennifer Stewart. “Our current Miss McAlester, Julia Wynn, has studied abroad,” Few said. The directors decided to incorporate that into the pageant theme,  she said. The current Miss McAlester Outstanding Teen is Cory Rubertus.

Miss McAlester contestants will compete in the talent, interview, evening gown, swimsuit and on-stage question categories. Teen contestants will compete in all but the swimsuit category, which will be replaced by active wear or sports wear, Few said.

After the entries are in, a contestant workshop will be held for the participants.

“We will go over the ins and outs of what to expect,” Few said.

Does she have any advice for those who are considering entering?

“I think the girls need to remember it’s a scholarship pageant,” Few said. “Every girl who enters gets some type of scholarship.”

No entry fee is in place for the Miss McAlester contestants. However, there is a $150 entry for the Miss McAlester Outstanding Teen contestants.

“Typically, they find a sponsor,” Few said. If a contestant has difficulty finding a sponsor, pageant organizers can assist them, according to Few, who said cost should not be a factor in preventing someone from entering the Outstanding Teen Pageant.

Tickets for the pageants will go on sale in May.

The Miss McAlester Scholarship Pageant is once again being conducted by the Beta Iota Epsilom sorority, which Few said has conducted the pageant since 1979. This will mark the fifth year the sorority has conducted the Miss Outstanding Teen Pageant.
