The American Legion Post No. 79 of McAlester plans a Memorial Day program Monday at Oak Hill Cemetery honoring veterans.
Judy Gray, office manager for the Post, said the 10 a.m. program at the McAlester cemetery, will include a 21-gun salute and symbolic laying of a wreath at the “grave of the unknown soldier.”
Guest speaker for the program will be local Korean Conflict veteran Gene Heathcock.
“Gene has been our sergeant at arms for over 40 years,” Gray said, referring to Heathcock’s role with the American Legion Post.
She added that Heathcock has been a member of the American Legion for more than 60 years.
In addition, Gray said the Legion post has worked hard over the past few weeks to coordinate volunteers to honor late veterans buried in Pittsburg County. A team of more than 50 volunteers was dispatched to more than 40 cemeteries throughout the county this weekend to place flags on each veteran’s grave.
“It’s all volunteers that put those flags out,” Gray said. “A lot of people don’t realize it’s all volunteers.”
