Tell us about your educational highlight, honor or accomplishment. What is it and how did you do it?
Becoming the 2017 Teacher of the Year for McAlester Public Schools is definitely the highlight of my career. This is an award that begins with being nominated by your peers. It is truly a privilege to be nominated but to make it to the finals and then be selected to represent our entire district is such an honor.
Why is this accomplishment important for you?
This accomplishment is important to me because I have a deep love for education. I have a passion to be the best teacher that I can be for my students. I love coming to school each and every day. It is my daily goal to make a positive impact in someone’s life. I strive to be as dedicated, my peers. For them to recognize in me the things that I see in them, is such an overwhelming feeling of accomplishment.
How much did you have to work to accomplish this goal or honor?
To accomplish this honor, I had to be selected by my peers to represent my building across the district as a candidate for the district Teacher of the Year. The next step in the process is to write several essays and submit them to be judged. These essays help the judges narrow down the candidates to four finalist. As a finalist, I was given the opportunity to be interviewed by a panel of peers from our district and from that interview the Teacher of the Year was selected. It was nerve racking and intense, but also exciting and heartwarming.
What plans do you have for the future?
My plans for the future are to continue to learn and grow as a teacher. My goal is to be the teacher who evolves and provides relevant content as the world around us changes.
