Pittsburg County commissioners opened bids for the construction of new Shady Grove fire station building on Monday.
The bids were opened and tabled for review during the commissioner’s regular meeting at the Pittsburg County Courthouse.
A resolution approving the request for bids was approved by the commissioners in March.
The funds to build the fire station for the Shady Grove Volunteer Fire Dept. will be provided by the Pittsburg County Fire Tax, according to District 3 Commission Chairman Ronnie Young.
Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Marlow and David Gillespie president of the Shady Grove Volunteer Fire Department were at the commissioners meeting.
Marlow said the new fire station will be built behind the existing fire station and will have five bays to hold additional fire truck.
Gillespie said in addition to adding a new building, the fire department has been working to update their Global Positioning System to add every Shady Grove residence.
“We are in the process of visiting each residence to get their GPS location and to get a count of who is living in each house and to get an emergency contact number,” Gillespie said.
“We need a count so if there is a fire we know who might be missing.”
Gillespie also said the fire department has also been working with Rural Water Dist. 9 on a plan to install fire hydrants.
Also attending Monday’s meeting was District 2 Commissioner Kevin Smith and District 1 Commissioner Gene Rogers.
The Pittsburg County commissioners meet Mondays at 9 a.m. in the commissioner’s conference room at the Pittsburg County Courthouse. The meetings are open to the public.
