A McAlester woman identified by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol as the driver of a van that fatally struck a Texas man on Nov. 20 is in the custody of the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Office.
Troopers identified Antonia “Toni” Jean Beall, 39, of McAlester, as the driver of a 2000 Plymouth Voyager van that struck and killed 34-year-old Curtis Wayne Johnson, of Lancaster, Texas.
An OHP communications officer told the News-Capital on Nov. 24 that investigators knew Beall’s location after speaking with her on Nov. 23.
OHP Public Information Officer Sarah Stewart said Beall was arrested and brought in on previous warrants by troopers Wednesday. Stewart said a report was sent to District 18 District Attorney Chuck Sullivan’s office, which will now determine if Beall will be charged in the incident.
Johnson was walking on the eastbound U.S Highway 69 service road south of Frink Road when he was struck by Beall, the OHP reported. After Johnson was found by an off-duty trooper, the man was transported to the McAlester Regional Health Center, where he succumbed to his injuries, according to the OHP.
Investigators said Beall took the van to an unknown location after the incident to have it concealed and requested the public’s assistance Nov. 24 in locating the van.
Stewart said the van had not been located as of Thursday afternoon.
