McAlester Police officers and firefighters are shown outside of a residence Friday night where an officer fatally shot and killed an attacking dog.

A dog was fatally shot by police Friday night after it attacked and injured two women before attacking an officer, officials said.

McAlester Police Cpt. Det. Don Hass said dispatchers received a call around 10 p.m. Friday night regarding a woman being attacked by a dog at a residence near the corner of South A Street and West Chickasaw Avenue in McAlester.

“An officer showed up, the dog attacked him, and he shot it,” Hass said.

Two women were transported to the McAlester Regional Health Center with injuries from the dog by the McAlester Fire Department.

Hass said officers are working on a full report in the matter due to the discharge of a firearm while on duty.

The officer will not be placed on leave for the incident as it was in defense of an attacking animal.

“If it would have been somebody, it would have been different,” Hass said.
