Powwow set for Saturday

McALESTER — The Arrowhead Powwow is set to begin at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Southeast Expo Center.

This is the second year the Powwow is being held at the Expo Center, according to Dena Cantrell McAlester field representative for the Choctaw Nation.

The events begin Saturday afternoon at 2:30 and Grand Entry will begin at 6:30 p.m.

“Everyone is welcome,” Cantrell said.

The Pow wow begins at 2:30 p.m. with several craft booths, basket weaving demonstrations, beading and pottery displays as well as dance contests.

“We have more than 20 crafters coming this year and we have just added a Choctaw Tradtional Dance for the women and girls,” Cantrell said.

She said the dance contests will include Fancy/Grass, Traditional/Straight, Fancy Shawl/Jingle, Buckskin/Cloth, Choctaw Ladies Cloth and Tiny Tots featuring dancers ages 6 and under.

The dancing will be dividing into two divisions for judging, including Juniors, ages 7 to 15 and Adults ages 16 and up.

Native American crafts will also be on display and available for sale.

Head Staff for this years event will be Master of Ceremony Tim Tall Chief, Arena Director Bill Takes Horse, Head Singer Rowe Kishketon, Head Man Fancy Michael Roberts, Head Man Traditional Presley Byington, Head Lady Leighann Koshiway, Head Gourd Dancer Joe Bohanon, Yellow Hill Gourd, the Choctaw Nation Color Guard.

Cantrell said this year’s Arrowhead Powwow Princess Olivia Roland and Little Princess Akiera Hawk will participate in this years events, according to Cantrell.

Concessions will include Indian Tacos provided by the Arrowhead Powwow Committee.

Craft booths are available for $40.

The event is free and open to the public. No alcohol is allowed.

The Southeast Expo Center is at 4500 W. Hwy. 270, McAlester.
