Hundreds attend ladies luncheon

McALESTER — The 42 Annual Women’s Holy Week Salad Luncheon took place Thursday at the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple.

Hundreds of McAlester area ladies gathered for the event which featured speaker Glenette Russell and vocalist Paige Grilliot.

Upon arrival at the luncheon, the ladies lined up to chose from several different salads of all types all brought, as in years past, by ladies who don’t work out of the home.

During the luncheon, the ladies were seated at long rows of tables decorated with wooden crosses.

For some of the ladies such as McAlester resident Vanessa Alsup, this was first time attending the luncheon. “It’s so nice,” Alsup said. “I am really enjoying it.”

For others, it’s an annual event that they look forward to, such as Mozelle Proctor who said she’s been coming  for 42 years.

“I was part of the group that helped get this started,” Proctor said. “I really enjoy it and it seems to get bigger every year.”

The luncheon opened with a welcome by Mistress of Ceremonies Karen Kinkead of the First Presbyterian Church.

Kinkead said that Maundy Thursday is named for last of the Ten Commandments which is “Love one Another.”

Pat Rounsaville of First Christian Church led the opening prayer, followed by a vocal performance.

Grillot gave an opera performance of “Paris Angelicus” by Cesar Frank. She said the title of the piece translates in English to “Bread of the Angels.”

Russell was introduced next by Kinkead.

Russell’s topic was a question, “Do You Remember?”

She said the Christian song “Mary Did You Know?” made her reflect on her pregnancies and the births of her children and the love she had for them.

“Did Mary know that her son would die for our sins?” she asked.

“What would she think if she knew we didn’t even remember? I wonder if God asks, ‘Did you forget that my Son died for you?’

“Time is short, the Lord is coming I want to be ready, but  do we remember?” she asked.

“I look at our country, our town, our church and myself,  and I ask, do I remember? I see more people on Sunday at the Little League field than at church. I see people who are more concerned with mowing their lawns than if their neighbor is going to heaven,” she said.

She recited John 3:16 from the Bible.

“’For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son.’ But do we remember?”

The luncheon closed with another performance by Grillot who sang “Were You There” and a closing prayer by  Rounsaville.

The event was planned by volunteers from six area churches including First Baptist Church, First United Methodist Church, St. John’s Catholic Church, First Presbyterian Church and All Saints’ Episcopal Church.
