Pittsburg County Junior Livestock show set to start next week

McALESTER — It’s time for the 71st Annual Pittsburg County Junior Livestock Show at the Pittsburg County Fairgrounds.

The show starts Wednesday and will feature 42 goats, 61 sheep, 209 swine and 54 cattle, according to Gail Kendrick show secretary.

Kendrick said with the exception of a few years, she’s been working with the show since 1977.

She said the show’s mission is offer the opportunity for young people to experience segments of production agriculture on a small scale through their livestock projects. It is the intention of those who support this event that these young people have the opportunity to learn valuable lessons that would include being responsible, the ethical and safe treatment of livestock, how to convert resources into a marketable product and awareness of the economic factors relating to their projects.

The show starts Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. with sheep goat and swine entries. Wednesday afternoon is the Judging of the Goats, Doe show, Market Goat Show, Ewe Show and the Market Lamb Show.

Thursdays events beginning at 9 a.m. with the swine judging, Gilt Show, Market Swine Show, Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Market Swine selection, Premium Sale selection and the Swine Showmanship contest.

Friday at 8 a.m. the show starts with the cattle entries at 8 a.m. followed by the Judging of Cattle at noon, followed by the Steer Show, including the Beef Showmanship Contest, the Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Steer selection and the Premium Sale selection.

Saturday the All-around Showmanship contest takes place at 9 a.m. and at 6 p.m. the Awards and Presentation Ceremony begins, followed by the Premium sale.

Winners will enter their livestock into the Premium Sale which is held Saturday evening. During the Premium Sale the livestock is auctioned off to the highest bidder.

The proceeds from each sale are returned to the winner.

The show is free, open to the public and concessions will be available.
