Power outage leaves 11 stranded in courthouse elevator

McALESTER — Several people were rescued from a courthouse elevator and a school program was shut down after a power outage hit McAlester Wednesday afternoon, officials say.

More than 1,000 McAlester residents were without power for some 15 minutes on Wednesday when an equipment failure caused a power outage, according Frank Phillips of American Electric Power/Public Service Company of Oklahoma.

The outage began at 1:57 p.m. Wednesday, ended at 2:15 p.m. and affected 1,251 customers, Phillips said.

McAlester Fire Captain Doug Basinger said 11 people were stuck in a Pittsburg County courthouse elevator for about 30 minutes because of the outage.

“We rescued nine inmates and two deputies from the elevator.”

He said there were no injuries.

The power outage also caused an after-school program at Washington Elementary to be canceled Wednesday, according the Debbie Watkins spokesman for McAlester Public Schools.

“The Beyond the Bell program did cancel for the day after they were told the outage could last several hours.” Watkins said.
