OHP slates free motorcycle safety course

McALESTER — The Oklahoma Highway Patrol will be back in McAlester to give a free motorcycle safety course on April 26.

The class will from 8 a.m.  to 4 p.m. at Life Church, 1300 S. George Nigh Expy.

Last year several motorcyclists took the course and this year OHP Trooper Dave Cravens said he hopes for even more riders will come out and take part in the class.

The class is called Advanced Civilian Motorcycle Safety School

and its conducted Oklahoma Highway Patrol Motorcycle Troopers and sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, according to Cravens

During the class the troopers will begin by instructing slow maneuvering riding skills, concentrating on clutch/throttle control, and head and eye placement, he said.

“The course will advance to braking and upper speed evasive maneuvers,” he said.

“Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a certificate that can be used to receive a three year discount on motorcycle insurance.

The class is free and open to the public.

Each participant is required to have a “M” motorcycle-endorsement license and a current insurance card at the time of the class.

Participants should bring all safety riding gear.

Cravens said space is limited to the first 30 who enroll.
