Firefighter issues challenge for April 5 Ryan's Run

McALESTER —  A McAlester firefighter is challenging other firefighters to run in full-bunker gear to help raise money for Ryan’s Run on April 5.

Ryan’s Run is the main fundraiser for the Pittsburg County Child Advocacy Center is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. on April 5 in front of Jackie Brannon Correctional Center, organizers say.

The run is named after Ryan Luke, a McAlester 2-year-old who died from child abuse in 1995, according to Cecilia Miers executive director of the PCCAC.

McAlester Firefighter Robby Rivers said he is issuing a challenge to all other firefighters to join Ryan’s Run in their full bunker gear.

“I ran in a race last weekend in full bunker gear just to test it out and it wasn’t easy,” Rivers said.

He said it wasn’t the weight of the gear, it was the heat caused by wearing the gear that proved to be the most challenging

Rivers said his goal is to raise money for the child advocacy center and to bring awareness to child safety by promoting smoke alarm awareness.

He said he will give a free “Stop the Burn” T-shirt to all the firefighters who take part in the run wearing their gear.

Meanwhile the money raised during the run, will be used to provide services to child abuse victims, help fund training for the professionals who investigate child abuse and help with general operations of the center, Miers said.

This will be the 19 year of Ryan’s Run which began when the year after Ryan’s death,  according to Miers.

More than 240 people took part in last years event which raised more than $11,000, she said.

“This was our biggest run to date,” Miers said.

She said she’s so thankful that people return each year and she’s hoping for a bigger turn out this year.

The five kilometer race starts and finishes on West Street and covers approximately 3.1 miles and includes a 1-Mile Fun Run.

The race will have standard five-year age brackets.

Awards will be given for first, second and third place in each bracket.

Medals will be awarded to all finishers of the 5K race. Walkers will be on the honor system.

The race is set to start at 8:30 a.m. on West Street in front of the Jackie Brannon Correctional Center.

Runners will turn west onto prison property on Grider Road and continue for approximately three-quarters of a mile before exiting the main gate at Oklahoma State Penitentiary.

Runners will then head east on Stonewall Avenue and turn north on A Street, continue on A Street and then turn west on Electric Avenue until they reach the finish line back at West Street.

Cost to enter is $20 for entries received before April 2 and $30 after. Race day entries will be accepted.
