A McAlester church went up in flames Monday morning.
Gray smoke could be seen billowing from the former BeeBee Christian Methodist Episcopal Church at 923 E. Chickasaw Ave. as fire fighters from McAlester and Krebs Fire Departments battled for hours in freezing weather to save the old building.
“We received the call about 9:44 a.m.,” said Chief Brett Brewer of the McAlester Fire Department.
Brewer said 15 firefighters, three fire engines and one ladder truck from the two fire departments worked to douse the flames for almost three hours.
No one was injured and the fire is under investigation, he said.
He said the fire started in one room and then spread to the ceiling.
“The fire destroyed the building which was in bad condition to begin with,” Brewer said.
