Livestock show brings competitors

McALESTER — Several Quinton 4-H’ers were busy grooming their heifers and steers to compete the 71st Annual Pittsburg County Livestock show on Friday.

Under cloudy skies Friday morning the 4-H’ers were busy grooming their heifers and steers for the cattle show.

The show started Wednesday and ended Saturday. Wednesday’s events included the sheep, goat and swine entries, judging of the goats, Doe Show, Market Goat Show, ewe show and the Market Lamb Show.

Events attorney Thursdays the Swine Judging, Gilt Show, Market Swine Show, Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Market Swine selection, Premium Sale selection and the Swine Showmanship contest.

Friday morning the first event the judging of cattle and that’s what Rynda Wilson said she was preparing her steer for.

Wilson, 11, a sixth grader at Quinton School. said she hoped her steer Redman would make it to the top 10.

She said Redman weighs 1,300 pounds and doesn’t like to be bathed.

“But we brush him every day so his hair will grow in the right direction,” Wilson said.

She said she’s had Redman for 11 months, he’s very friendly and likes to lick her in the face when he greets her.

Also taking part in the day’s competition was Kyleigh Hillburn an eighth grader Quinton.

Hillburn was busy blow drying her heifer, Coco. She said she’s been raising Coco for a year.

Hillburn said Coco didn’t mind being washed, brushed and blow dried, even in the cold weather. She said she was looking forward the day’s events.

“I’m excited to see how she does in the show,” she said.

Friday’s events included the Judging of Cattle, Steer Show, and the Beef Showmanship Contest, the Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Steer selection and the Premium Sale selection.

All the events led to Saturday’s All-around Showmanship contest and the Awards and Presentation Ceremony along with the Premium sale.

Winners entered their livestock into the Premium Sale held Saturday evening. The livestock was auctioned off to the highest bidder.

The proceeds from each sale were returned to the winner.
