Burn ban still in effect

McALESTER — A countywide burn ban continues to be in effect until this Friday, according to a proclamation signed last Friday by the Pittsburg County commissioners.

The ban went into effect after a special meeting of Pittsburg County commissioners held at the Pittsburg County Courthouse. After the ban was signed, the issue was to be added as an agenda item for Tuesday’s regular weekly meeting to review the ban.

But none of the county’s fire chiefs requested a ban be put into effect. That’s why commissioners could not vote during Tuesday’s  meeting to continue the ban through the next week, according to District 2 Commissioner Kevin Smith.

“We will most likely have a special meeting on Thursday if a burn ban is requested,” Smith said.

Meanwhile, Latimer County commissioners signed a countywide burn ban for their area on Tuesday.

The bans in Pittsburg County and Latimer County prohibit burning grass or setting fire to any grass, crop, range, forest or wildlands.

The ban on burning also prohibits burning trash or building a bonfire or campfire, or burning other material that may cause a forest, grass, range, crop or other wildlands fire.

Anyone convicted of violating the ban faces a possible penalty of up to a year in jail, a fine of not more than $500, or both.
