Pinewood Derby workshops set for race in February

McALESTER — Pinewood Derby workshops are now in session every Saturday until the big race on Feb. 15, according to organizer Bob Masters.

Masters is the district manager for the Boy Scouts’ OkiTuli District and he said he organizes the annual Cub Scout’s event.

He said the free workshops, held at Lowes from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, are for those who plan to participate in the annual Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby set for 10 a.m. on Feb. 15 at St. John’s Catholic Church, 300 E. Washington Ave. District.

And although the derby is designed for Cub Scouts, Masters said anyone can participate.

“Last year we had 97 participants, 15 girls and 7 adults,” Masters  said.

“We have different divisions for the Scouts, the girls and the adults,” Master said.

He said the derby involves racing a handmade wooden model car which is created from an official pinewood block.

Masters said there are special dimensions and rules that must be followed and weight restrictions for the car.

The dates for the Lowe’s workshops are Jan. 18, Jan. 25 and Feb. 1.

Pinewood Derby car kits will be available at Lowe’s for $5.
