McAlester man accused of kidnapping, maiming, assault and rape

McALESTER — A McAlester man is accused of kidnapping a woman, assaulting her, raping her and maiming her.

Clyde R. Harshaw, 42, was charged July 12 in Pittsburg County District Court with felony counts of kidnapping, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, maiming, aggravated domestic assault and battery and rape by instrumentation.

According to court records, deputies with the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched July 10 to the McAlester Regional Health Center on an assault complaint. When they arrived, deputies spoke with a woman who was being treated for multiple injuries, an affidavit states. The woman told the deputies that Harshaw held her captive for four to five days and beat her.

The woman told authorities that Harshaw “took a black and orange battery operated drill with some kind of wire brush attachment and stuck it in her hair and turned it on (and) wrapped (her) hair in it and pulled (her) hair out,” the affidavit states. The woman also told the deputies that Harshaw “would use a hammer to hit (her) knees and legs and attempted to set her hair on fire,” the affidavit states. She also told authorities that Harshaw “poured some kind of acid on her feet and legs causing burns ... (and he) used a pocket knife to cut (her) arms and legs,” the affidavit states. She also told them Harshaw sexually assaulted her, according to the affidavit.

When the deputies asked how she was able to get away, the woman told them that when Harshaw “grabbed her clothes and set fire to them ... she took off running west on Hereford Lane and a vehicle stopped (and) picked her up,” the affidavit states.

The woman said she had the driver take her to her sister’s house and called 911, the affidavit states.

Authorities then interviewed Harshaw and an alleged witness to the assault and Harshaw was arrested and taken to the Pittsburg County jail, where he is being held without bond.

If convicted, Harshaw is facing up to life in prison. He is due back in court Aug. 1 at 9 a.m.
