Body found in Lake Eufaula

McALESTER — The body of a man was found Sunday on Lake Eufaula, officials say.

The Pittsburg County Undersheriff Wes Robertson said Tuesday they are investigating the death of David Vincent Elliott, 58, of Eufaula, who was found dead Sunday morning.

Deputies found Elliott’s body floating in the cove east of the Alta Vista boat ramp in the Bower community of Longtown, according to a sheriff’s report.

A folded camping chair was found on the dock near where the body was found, the report states.

According the report, Elliott and a female friend were there fishing and drinking rum, until about 3 p.m. when the friend wanted to leave. The woman said  Elliott starting arguing, so the she left and spent the night at a friend’s house, the report states.

The woman returned to the dock the next morning and found Elliott’s body floating in the water, according to the report.

Three other witnesses told deputies they heard arguing, yelling and groaning near the scene where the Elliott’s body was found, the report states.

According the report, a man fishing from another dock reported he saw Elliott yelling and arguing with everyone. The man told deputies he pulled Elliott out of the water after Elliott tried to retrieve a folding chair from the lake, the report states

The man said that he unsuccessfully tried to take Elliott home; however he was able to retrieve Elliott’s wallet and he notified Elliott’s father where Elliott was, the report states.

A second witness reported that he and a friend were fishing Saturday about 7:20 p.m.  and he saw older white man on the dock who was “very drunk and yelling at everyone” at 7:20 p.m., according to the report.

Then between 9:30 and 10 p.m. the same witness reported that he and his friend returned to the area and allegedly heard someone “groaning and mumbling from the opposite bank but they couldn’t see anyone,” and left the scene about 11 p.m., according to the report.

A third witness ,who lives near the scene, reported hearing three males yelling and screaming from the docks at about 11 p.m.

Robertson said the cause of death will be determined by the state Chief Medical Examiner’s office; however no foul play is suspected.
