Toughman contest returns to McAlester

Presented once again by Brangus Feed Lot, “The Original Toughman Contest” returns for it’s second year to McAlester.

The event will begin at 8 p.m. each night, Oct. 6 and 7 at the Southeast Expo Center, with doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets went on sale Monday at Corral West, Brangus Feel Lot and Dave’s Fitness. Interested participants can also sign up to fight at these three locations. Tickets can be charged by phone at (800) 883-4897. Fighters can also register by calling that number.

Some of the fighters will be there to take a punch, some will take a dive and others will try to bob and weave, but the one certainty is there will be fast and furious action.

The event will pit about 40 local men and women in a two-day, single-elimination amateur boxing tournament where they will fight again and again until only one is left in each weight division. It’s the contest with more guts, more glory and more girth than any other sporting event.

Forty-three applications have already been requested by interested fighters. This fight to the finish will qualify the winners to go on to the World Championship fight where $40,000 in prize money will be paid out in November at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut. Two Oklahoma competitors are to be featured in the 2006 event.

Unlike Ultimate Fighting Championships where competitors fight three to five minute rounds with four ounce gloves, “The Original Toughman Contest” requires 16 ounce gloves and the rounds are only one minute in length.

Toughman gives the armchair athlete a chance to test him or herself for one weekend. The drama of the two-day event is apparent: Why would anyone who has never fought take a chance on looking foolish or faint-hearted? Why would a single father with two boys want to fight and risk getting hurt? Why would men enter year after year when they don’t get close to savoring the championship? The answers can be found ringside at the McAlester Southeast Expo Center.
