Shinn at 3 p.m.: Mike Stoops wanted Sumlin with him in Arizona

The Norman Transcript

IRVING, Texas — Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops has joked that he probably wouldn’t be back in Norman if he could have assembled the coaching staff he truly wanted when took the Arizona job back in December of 2003.

His original choice for offensive coordinator was then OU special teams coordinator and tight ends coach Kevin Sumlin.

“I thought I had him. It would have made my life a lot easier, I know that. He owes me,” Stoops said Tuesday morning.

Sumlin, who just finished his first season as Texas A&M’s head coach, remained on the Sooners’ staff for four more seasons before taking over at Houston prior to the 2008 season.

“I don’t know what happened. I thought we had it done,” Stoops said. “But he just decided his opportunities would be better at Oklahoma. As it turned out, who knows, but it worked out pretty well.”

For Sumlin, it did. He was just named the SEC coach of the year and has a career record of 45-19, dating back to the four seasons he spent at Houston.

Mike Stoops is back at his old job as OU’s defensive coordinator after going 41-50 in 7 1/2 seasons at Arizona.
