Gray still set to pitch in super regional despite testing positive for Addderall

OKLAHOMA CITY — ESPN.com reported Monday afternoon that Oklahoma pitcher Jonathan Gray tested positive for the stimulant Adderall in a pre Major League Baseball Rule 4 draft screening.

Gray, who is expected to be one of the first players selected when the draft begins Thursday, is currently 10-2 with a 1.59 ERA for the Sooners.

OU will meet LSU in an NCAA Tournament Super Regional series beginning either Friday or Saturday at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge, La.

Gray’s status for that series doesn’t appear to be affected by the ESPN.com report. OU released a statement Monday night saying Gray’s eligibility is not in question.

“All University of Oklahoma student-athletes are subject to institutional and NCAA drug testing and are subject to corrective action relative to those policies,” the statement read. “At this time, we are able to confirm that Jonathan Gray is eligible to compete for the University of Oklahoma baseball program.”

OU coach Sunny Golloway had no comment on Gray’s status or the ESPN.com report when contacted Monday.

Adderall is on NCAA list of banned drugs. The stimulant is often prescribed as a treatment for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). According to the ESPN.com report, Gray did not have a prescription for the stimulant.

The test was issued by Major League Baseball to 200 of the top prospects in this year’s draft.
