Get your motor runnin’.
Are you looking for adventure with your cool-looking tricked-out ride? Or maybe you’re just a fan of fine looking vehicles — either way, you are just the person the Big Mac Cruzers Car Club is looking for.
Car aficionados of all ages are welcome to join the club. And don’t worry about the cost — anybody on any budget can afford the cost of membership.
“We don’t charge anything for people to join the club,” one of the organizers, Bobby Harris said. “Our goal is to get as many people involved in this club as we can.”
The Cruzers have a Friday night car show in the Tandy Town parking lot most Fridays at 7:30 p.m. Harris said the informal shows will continue as long as weather permits.
“It’s a friendly gathering of people that love cars. We welcome people to come out and participate. We have a good crowd that turns out on Friday nights and we really enjoy it. There is a lot of camaraderie and visiting,” Harris said.
“We had approximately 20 cars out last Friday and I would love to see about 50.
“One of our members even displays an old fire truck he restored.
“People are welcome to bring all kinds of cars, trucks and motorcycles to the shows. We welcome them all. Lately we’ve been having a lot more Volkswagens enter.”
Harris said the club is into its second year and one of its main goals has been promoting “cruise nights” in downtown McAlester.
In addition to attending car shows from all across the area, the club members are planning a car show of their own.
They are calling it the North Town Car Show and Swapmeet. It will be held on Sept. 27 in McAlester’s North Town. A cruise night, in conjunction with the show, is also planned.
“We just got back from a nice car show in Eufaula,” Harris said. “Our club has attended shows in Hartshorne, Coalgate and Claremore. A really big show is coming up during the Robbers Cave Fall Festival in Wilburton. More than 500 cars will be there.”
Most of the people that enter their cars in the shows have spent a great deal of time personalizing them.
“People put a lot of time and money into their cars,” Harris said.
“Club member Tandy Thomas has an excellent ’57 Chevy. He’s won several trophies with his car. In Eufaula he won for best paint, best chrome and best interior.”
Harris has big plans for the fledgling club. His ultimate goal is for a huge car show and swapmeet at the Southeast Expo Center. If early success of the club is any indication, get the Expo Center ready.
