Children from all across the state are in McAlester to play in the 37th Annual City of McAlester Parks and Recreation/Tourism Junior Open tennis tournament.
The event is currently underway in McAlester and will continue today and possibly Saturday.
The three-day tournament is for youths age 10-18 and will be held at different area tennis courts in the city.
The tournament headquarters will be at the Chadick Park tennis courts.
“This is a very popular tennis tournament, we had over 100 children participating this year,” Mel Priddy community services director for the City of McAlester said.
Competitors from Edmond, Oklahoma City, Ada and Tulsa are on hand for the tournament, McAlester high School tennis coach Chad Waller said.
Waller is also director of the junior open tournament.
McAlester 10 and under tennis players had success in the event. Colin Smith took first place in the boy’s singles and Evan Smith placed second in boy’s singles.
Sixteen-eighteen year old players will compete today.
“It’s been a good tournament,” Waller said. “Seeing people from all over the state playing here in McAlester is great.
“The tournament could be completed today or it may be continued until Saturday.” Waller said
