Georgia shows Texas why bigger is better

Team Georgia showcased an all around baseball team for the 2009 Junior Sunbelt Classic. They defeated team Texas in the championship game, 21-2, Wednesday at Mike Deak Field.

Team Georgia was off with a one run lead after the first inning. The lead-off batter for Texas hit a solo home run over the left field wall that tied the ball game in the top of the second inning.

Georgia ended the inning with a double play.

Texas walked the bases loaded, sending team Georgia’s second baseman Stryker Brown up to the plate. Brown hit a shot over the infield to the gap of left-center for an RBI single, and another run crossed home plate from a throwing error.

The next batter for team Georgia was shortstop Adam Frazier who earned a hit to the opposite field, bringing in another run in for Georgia. Then Dabias Johnson sent one out for a home run with an RBI — Georgia was continuing from the first meeting spreading the point gap — that made the score 6-1 with no outs.

Georgia continued to show discipline at the plate. Chris Hawkins turned a single hit into a triple after Texas couldn’t get the throw to a cut-off man.

Hawkins crossed the plate from a sacrifice fly from team Georgia’s outfielder Patrick Cosgrove. With Cosgrove’s RBI, that brought the score to 8-1 in the bottom of the second inning. Texas put a pitcher in the bullpen to warm up after Georgia had done some damage.

After team Texas’ starting pitcher walked another batter in the bottom of the third inning, team Texas’ head coach O.J. Holcomb brought in Dillon Newman of Belton High School to pitch for Texas.

Team Georgia had the lead over Texas, 12-1, and was still at bat in the bottom of the second inning. Brown was up to bat again, got on base, then crossed home plate on a wild pitch. Texas was able to end the inning with a ground out, but Georgia had stamped their name with the 12-run inning off nine hits. The score at the top of the third inning was 13-1.

"Team Georgia is dynamic," Spectator George Trevino said. "They are flawless with a lot of bat discipline."

Team Georgia was getting hit after hit and did not hold up on team Texas. They continued to add runs through the game.

After four innings Georgia remained with the lead 21-2 and shattered Texas’ chances at a comeback.

Team Georgia run-ruled team Texas in the fifth inning 21-2 to earn the 2009 Junior Sunbelt Classic Championship plaque.

In other games at Wilburton’s Eastern Oklahoma State College, team Canada defeated team Oklahoma White, 10-2, for ninth place.

Team Oklahoma Gold defeated team Oklahoma Blue, 11-6, for seventh place. Team Mississippi defeated team Missouri, 8-3, for fifth place; team Arizona defeated team Tennessee, 9-7, with a walk-off home run for third place.
