Just another classic day

exas improves to 6-1 to lead the teams — Mississippi picks up second win of the tournament; Medal day begins Wednesday at noon in Hartshorne

After a 13-inning, four-hour game against California, the Texas team showed no signs of fatigue as they blanked Missouri for their second win of the day, and sixth win of the Junior Sunbelt Classic.

Texas seemed to be one long highlight reel, with 94 mile per hour fast balls, the long-ball and diving catches in the outfield, as they clamored to a 9-0 victory.

Perhaps the only disappointment for Texas came in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Missouri’s Josh Walker ruined Texas hurler, Paul Demny’s chances at a no-hitter with a two-out base hit.

Texas had several big-hitters on the evening, notably Ricky Mendez, who connected on a home run in the first and followed it up with a triple in the fourth inning.

The boys from south of the Red River ended the contest with eight hits and no errors in the field.

Walker’s was the only hit of the contest for Mizzou, while there were three errors committed.

Missouri heads into today’s games with a 2-5 record and will face Oklahoma Gold at 2 p.m. and Mississippi at 7:45.

Texas has only lost one contest, and plays Arizona this morning at 11:30 and Georgia at 5 p.m.

Mississippi 11. Canada 5

Two one-win teams squared off at Mike Deak Field Monday afternoon for a chance to move ahead.

Canada and Mississippi both got their wins on the first day of play against Oklahoma teams, but haven’t been able to get another one.

With Patrick Dougherty on the mound, Mississippi took their first lead in the top of the third inning, when a two-run single from Tyler Vick got them on the board. Mississippi scored five runs in the inning helped along by three errors from Canada.

Canada came within 8-5 after an RBI single from Leslie Williams, but Canada couldn’t pull any closer.

Mississippi played Georgia this morning and will play Missouri in the nightcap at Hartshorne tonight, beginning at 7:45.
