McAlester golf celebrates a successful 2008 season

By GLEN ELLER

The 2008 season of McAlester High School golf has been declared a success by coaches and parents, during the MHS Golf Banquet held Thursday evening at the McAlester Country Club.

“I would like to thank all of our parents and supporters,” McAlester High School girls golf coach Patrick Dotson said.

“We couldn’t have had the success we enjoyed this season if it wasn’t for you.”

McAlester High School boys golf coach Jon Freeman was not able to be at the event. Dr. Jack Sheets spoke on his behalf about the successful year for the boys golf team.

“We are very proud of each of you young men. It is great to see the golfers work as a team,” said Dr. Sheets. “During the season each and every one of the boys stepped up and played well. To qualify for state it was very important that every score count and all the players did well.”

Both MHS golf teams qualified for the state tournament this year.

“We improved so much as a team during the season,” said Dotson.

“In our first tournament the girls team finished with an overall score of 422 and we improve to a tournament best 366. That’s quite an accomplishment.”

Julia Wynn was named as the girl’s Golfer of the Year and Ryan Uselton who took 31 strokes off her game was the most improved player for the girl’s team.
