The McAlester Buffaloes girls golf team placed ninth in the Class 5A Girls Golf State Championship.
The two day tournament was held Wednesday, April 30 and Thursday, May 1, at Surrey Hills Golf Club, in Yukon.
The Lady Buffs all sophomore squad of Julia Wynn, Virginia Judge, Caroline Sheets, Ryann Uselton and Keaton Gray have improved from their 12th place finish during last year’s state tournament.
The first windy day of competition had golfers swinging cautiously, scoring higher than the second day, at Surrey Hills.
“The wind was reflected throughout the tournament,” head coach Patrick Dotson said.
“The weather cleaned up on Thursday and left the tournament real competitive.”
In the second day of competition for the Lady Buffs Wynn shot an 84, Judge 92, Sheets 94 and Uselton 112.
The girls golf team improved seven to twelve strokes from their first day of competition.
“I’m not just pleased with the girls performance, I’m very proud,” Dotson said.
“The first day was horrible conditions, with 40 mph gusting wind. No one could get anything.
“I didn’t think the course was as difficult as the McAlester Regional,” Dotson said.
“Going to western Oklahoma — the extreme windy conditions were certainly a factor that we haven’t really played in all year”
The Lady Buffs’ placed 12th, out of 12 schools in the state tournament last year.
The team was awarded the Academic championship last year, as well.
This years 3.91 GPA was just short of receiving the award this year.
