Athletes from Buffs track team qualify for state meet

The McAlester High School Boys and Girls track team has qualified 20 athletes for the Class 5A state track meet.

The state track meet will be held on Friday and Saturday at Ardmore High School in Ardmore.

“I think we did really well at the regional meet,” McAlester High School track coach Richard Carney said.

The Class 5A Regional track meet was held at Tulsa Union High School last Saturday.

“Our boys won the meet. We had 10 athletes in first place and all three of our relays won first place.

“Herman Walters won the 100 and 200 meter dash. Jordan Anderson won the high jump and long jump and Caleb Carney won the pole vault.”

Don Brown took first in the 400 meter dash.

Buffs relay teams were dominate at the regional meet.

The Buffs were first in the following races. The 4 x 100 meter relay including Walters, Caleb Carney Brown and Anderson.

The 4 x 400 meter relay team is Brown, Delante Redway, Carney and Will Gupton.

The 4 x 800 meter relay runners are Josh Carney, Chance Carie, Redway and Gupton.

To qualify for state an athlete must be in the top three places in their respective event.

“The girls team really did well too,” Carney added.

“Megan Bilos placed first in the 100 meter hurdles, and Bilos won the 100 and 200 meter dash.”

Tiara Johnson placed first in the long jump and also qualified in the high jump.

Other qualifiers for McAlester girls are, in the 4 x 800 meter relay, Jordyn Bass, Robin Ray, Stephanie Wills and Lauren Fassino. Deah Woods qualified for the Buffs team in the pole vault.

“We had 20 athletes who qualified for state which is a big number.” Carney said

“Our team really did well this last Saturday, but then again, we have done extremely well over the course of the year.”
