Hartshorne Miners going to state

By Porky Falcon
Sports Writer

The Hartshorne Miners baseball team took the Class 3A Regional Championship, Friday afternoon at Sulphur high school.

This marks the Miners second trip to the state tournament, in three years.

The Miners swept the Heavener Wolves, in a two game shut out — first game 10-0, second game 7-0, for the District title.

At the regional tournament, the Miners played some close numbered ball games before winning the championship.

The Miners trailed the Tishomingo Indians 4-0 at the bottom of the fifth inning — before they came back to win 6-5.

In the semi final game, against the Lexington Bulldogs, the Miners’ seniors Morgan Nelson and Dalton Nelson pitched a 3-1 win over the Bulldogs to advance to the finals.

The Miners (25-5) defeated the Sulphur Bulldogs 12-10 in a back and forth battle of the bats.

During the championship game, the Miners trailed the Bulldogs by four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. They closed the gap at the bottom of the sixth inning, 10-9.

The Miners senior Daniel Sanderfur hit a three shot homerun and closed out the inning shortly after, that brought the score to 12-10.

The defense came through and prevented any runs from scoring.

The Miners are set to play in Mustang, Thursday, against the Bethel Wildcats, at noon in the first round of the state championship tournament. The winner will advance to the semi final game in Shawnee, Friday at noon.
