After the ritual of showering your opponent with high-velocity volleyballs in the warm-up process, it came down to the wire Thursday night when McAlester Lady Buffs finally beat the Jenks Trojans after a five-set volleyball battle.

After losing to Jenks last year, and with the relevant Kelsey Hancock who moved to Edmond this year, the win against Jenks was big to the girls, says McAlester Buffs Volleyball Head Coach Julie James.

The win came into view when “our defense got around,” says James.

The Lady Buffs started strong with Sara Carpenter serving, as she charged into a 5-0 lead. She finished the game with four aces. The buffs won the first set by a close 25-23, and started off on the right track, with the momentum in the Lady Buffs favor.

However, the volleyball Gods smiled upon the Trojans, as they won the second set 25-23. With the Trojans leading 17-24, the Lady Buffs tried to come back, but Jenks held their own, and ended the bloody battle at 19-25 for a Jenks win.

The Trojans remained heated with a third set win 25-23, and to push the match into a five-set salvo.

The intensity remained high and the Lady Buffs wasn’t about to give in as the set went to 28-26, Lady Buffs most detrimental win of the night.

The fifth began with Sabrina Burns helping the Lady Buffs take the lead 4-3 with a massive kill. Amelia Judge also accounted for seven kills for the night, along with “The real deal” Sarah Beale adding a soft dink to push the lead to 13-10, and leading the team with 16 kills for the night. Megan Billos helped out with seven digs, and Brittany Condit pitched in with eight digs.

The long war was finally over with a short fifth-set battle and a Lady Buffs victory 15-11.

The final scores for the five sets — McAlester 25-23, Jenks 25-19, Jenks 25-23, McAlester 28-26, and McAlester 15-11.

The next Lady Buffs match-up will be Aug. 22 at Union at 4 p.m.
