The near flawless defense by both Wilburton and Poteau kept the score low, but the Lady Diggers took the 1-0 win in the Wednesday shutout.

With April Roye on the mound for the Diggers the game didn’t last long as a three-up, three-down pattern became the norm.

A single by Sarah McGee in the second and a slap over the third baseman by Lacey Mize in the third were all to disrupt the early-inning silence until an error put Sarah McGee on base. Hoping to do more prominent damage McGee stole second to advance into scoring position.

Pitcher April Roye picked up the offensive slack with an RBI single knocking in McGee for the only score in the game.

In the bottom of the fifth Poteau loaded the bases from a combined error, walk and hit with only one out in the inning. The inning save began with right fielder Desiree Wilson making a catch and quick throw to home to prevent the score, followed by third baseman Jessica Cecil handling a grounder and making the out to end the fifth inning scare.

A sixth inning hush was disturbed by a seventh inning alarm, due to a couple of errors resulting in two Poteau pirates on base with only one out.

With the tying run on second, out fielder Desiree Wilson came to the lady Diggers aid once again and made a leaping catch for the second out of the inning. The game ended with a fly out to short stop and the Wilburton lady Diggers were handed their first win of the season.

The Lady Diggers will be looking for their second victory against Talihina at Wilburton this friday at 4:30 p.m.
