The Buffs came up just short for the second straight week as they were on the losing end of a 28-21 final score against one of Class 5A’s toughest teams, Tulsa Booker T. Washington. The home loss dropped the Buffs to 2-5 on the season, 2-2 in district play.

McAlester is no stranger to heartbreaking defeat this season as four of its five losses have been by a touchdown or less.

After turning the ball over on downs on their second offensive possession, McAlester had the Hornets backed up to their own 33 yardline. On second and 10, linebacker Josh Carney put the Buffs on the board first with an interception and 35 yard return for a touchdown. The PAT gave McAlester a 7-0 lead with 6:17 remaining in the first quarter.

The Hornets ate away four minutes on their next possession and tied the game with a 10-yard touchdown run by Michael Harris and successful PAT. With 2:20 remaining in the first, the game was tied 7-7.

Both teams sputtered on offense for nearly the remainder of the first half. McAlester took back the lead with 47 seconds remaining in the half on an 18-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Justin Klusak to Lyndon Walters. The PAT and a missed field goal by the Hornets in the closing seconds gave McAlester a 14-7 lead at halftime.

The Hornets came buzzing out of the intermission and scored the game’s next two touchdowns.

At the four minute mark of the third quarter, Tulsa quarterback Collier Winters tossed a 33-yard touchdown pass to Rico LeBlanc and a successful PAT tied the game at 14-14.

With 30 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Winters hit Damarques Potter for a 35-yard touchdown pass. The PAT put Tulsa on top 21-14.

The Buffs came back on their next possession to tie the game for the third time. On third-and-6 from the Tulsa 21 yardline, Klusak faked a handoff to Deon Hall and then ran to his right for the Buffs’ final score of the game. With 8:24 the score was 21-21.

Both teams went three-and-out on their next possessions and Tulsa shattered McAlester’s dream of an upset win by scoring the winning touchdown with 1:25 to play.

The Buffs moved the ball to the Tulsa 49 yardline after a pair of 15-yard penalties but Klusak was intercepted with less than a minute to go as he tried to move the Buffs into scoring position.
