Thursday's College and Career Expo hosts more than 1,100 eighth-grade students

McALESTER — On Thursday, the seventh annual College and Career Expo for southeastern Oklahoma eighth-grade students took place at the Southeast Expo Center.

“We had 1158 eighth-grade students from 32 school districts in Southeastern Oklahoma,” said Janet Wansick, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and

Institutional Research Eastern Oklahoma State College. “There were 50 booths representing various businesses and educational institutions.”

Wansick said students from McAlester High School volunteered for the Road Trip booth, which is designed for students to get a feel for how career decisions impact finances.

The event is free to students and exhibitors.

Anne Brooks director of EOSC’s McAlester campus said the Expo helps students to see what careers are out there, it encourages them to graduate from high school and it lets them know they need a diploma.

She said, during the Expo, students visit the different exhibitor booths and ask questions and have the opportunity learn about the different jobs that are available.

They can learn about different industries and how long they need to plan to go to school, she said.

The Expo gave businesses that participated an opportunity to meet and help provide guidance to the eighth graders, as well as gain access to hundreds of other volunteers, professionals, organizations, and businesses in southeastern Oklahoma, Brooks said.

Brooks said the networking possibilities alone are worth the time investment and they are helping to play a critical role in the education of our community students.

Wansick said the eighth annual College and Career Expo will be held Oct. 23, 2014 and she said EOSC encourages businesses participating to mark the date.
