What do you think? MPS wants to know

McALESTER — McAlester Public Schools administrators are considering asking voters again to pass a school bond issue — but this time they’re trying something different.

School administrators want to hear from the community before deciding exactly what to present to the voters.

To begin obtaining that information. a meeting is set for 7 p.m. Monday at the MPS Central Office inside the former McAlester High School building at 200 E. Adams Ave.

“We want everyone to know they’re welcome,” said MPS Superintendent Dr. Marsha Gore.

“This meeting will be one of the most important events in determining the future of McAlester Public Schools,” Gore said.

While amounts under consideration for a possible school bond issue this spring range from $4 million to $18 million, nothing has been finalized at this point, Gore said.

Voters in the MPS school district twice rejected school bond issues in 2011 — first in January and then again in October. Both of those votes occurred before Gore became superintendent, and she’s hoping for more community input this time around before any final decisions are made on what to present to voters.

One of the plans involves creating a bond issue task force to review the information gleaned from the suggestions forthcoming from the community, families of students and staff members, Gore said.

The information will then be presented to the McAlester Public Schools Board of Education for the board’s review and approval, according to Gore.

Gore said she hopes the school system gets some helpful information from the community during the Monday night meeting.

“We want everyone’s ideas and thoughts,” she said. “We want to provide the best academic decision for each child.”
