Crowder eighth grade names top honors

McALESTER — Shelby Lynne Burks, Keaton Dean Hackler and Lauren Brooke York were honored as valedictorians at Crowder School’s eighth-grade graduation May 14. Stoney Brook Ragan was recognized at as salutatorian at the 7 p.m. ceremony, set to be held in the new Crowder gymnasium.

Burks is the daughter of K.J. and Cher Burks, of Crowder. Her maternal grandparents are Larry and Joyce Cox, of Blocker, and paternal grandparents are Gene and Nancy Whisenhunt, of McAlester, and the late Gayle Burks.

Shelby has maintained a 4.06 grade-point average and has been on the Superintendent’s Honor Roll since kindergarten. She has been nominated as a National Youth Leader since sixth grade, is active in the Academic Quiz Bowl, 4-H, and junior high instrumental music and attends McAlester First Freewill Baptist Church. She has attended district competition at Southeastern Oklahoma State University for viola the past two years, and district and state competition for piano.

She plans to attend Crowder High School and Oklahoma State University to pursue a degree in veterinary medicine.

Hackler is the son of Glen and Tammir Hackler, of McAlester. His maternal grandparents are Dale and Janice Barker, of McAlester, and paternal grandparents are Glen and Becky Hackler, of McAlester, and Bonnie Hackler, of Indianola.

Keaton has maintained a 4.06 GPA and has been on the Superintendent’s Honor Roll since kindergarten. He has been nominated as a National Youth Leader since sixth grade and is active in basketball, junior high Student Council and junior high instrumental music. He attends First Assembly of God Church. He has attended district competition at SOSU for violin the past two years. He plans to attend CHS and Oklahoma University to pursue a degree in anesthesiology.

York is the daughter of Angela White, of Bugtussle, and the late Greg York. Maternal grandparents are Donny and Jessica Wilson, of Tulsa, and the late Rusty Short. Paternal grandparents are Anna York, of McAlester, and the late Milford York.

Lauren has maintained a 4.13 GPA and has been on the Superintendent’s Honor Roll since kindergarten. She has been nominated as a National Youth Leader since sixth grade and has been active in Academic Quiz Bowl, junior high Student Council, junior high instrumental music and softball. She attends Kings House Church and has played violin, receiving a rating of 1 at competition. She plans to attend CHS and OU to pursue a degree in anesthesiology.

Ragan is the son of Rodney and Michelle Ragan. Maternal grandparents are Brook and Janice Hopson, of McAlester, and paternal grandparents are Howard and Batty Ragan, of Ulan.

Stoney has maintained a 4.03 GPA and has been on the Superintendent’s and Principal’s Honor Rolls. He has been nominated as a National Youth Leader since sixth grade and is active in basketball, baseball, golf and junior high Student Council. A member of Northtown Church of Christ, he plans to attend CHS and OU to pursue a degree in dental medicine.
