MHS' Pride of McAlester Sweeps State

McALESTER — McAlester High School’s Pride of McAlester Marching Band has won the 5A State Sweepstakes award from the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association.

Band Director David Steidley this is third year— in a row— that the band has received the Sweepstakes award and it’s also the Pride of McAlester’s 18th State Sweepstakes title, which requires superior ratings in marching, concert performance and sight-reading.

“I’m so proud of my band and for my seniors, Steidley said.

“This is remarkable that they have won this award three of the four years they have been here.”

Steidley said the Sweepstakes is the ultimate goal.

Meanwhile Steidley said the band, which includes string, percussion, wind and jazz ensembles has been working on their end-of-the-year concert set for 7 p.m. on May 11 at S. Arch Thompson Auditorium.

“We always have a lot of fun at the end of the year,” Steidley said.

The band will perform selections from the band Journey and the movie Frozen, he said.

The performance is free and open to the public.
