McAlester student accepted to Arts Institute

McALESTER — Brandi Hongell, of McAlester, has been accepted to the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute at Quartz Mountain, an arts academy held in June in southwestern Oklahoma.

Hongell was one of 270 students selected through competitive statewide auditions from a pool of nearly 1,000 applicants. In conjunction with acceptance, Hongell will receive a full scholarship to the program worth more than $2,500.

Hongell, a McAlester High School student, will study orchestra at OSAI, to be held June 14-29.

The institute provides training with award-winning artists in nine disciplines of the literary, visual and performing arts. Faculty artists have included winners of the Academy, Emmy, Grammy and Tony awards and the Pulitzer Prize. This year’s faculty includes Tomasz Golka, chief conductor of the Colombian National Symphony, and Dean Irby, former acting coach for the hit television series “The Cosby Show.”
