Hartshorne, Quinton, Wilburton bands compete

McALESTER — Marching bands from Hartshorne, Quinton and Wilburton competed at the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association Southeastern Regional last week in McAlester. Quinton’s marching band earned a top rating of “I,” while Wilburton earned top marks in color guard and from several soloist and ensemble performers.

“We had a great day,” Quinton band director Mary Adcock said of the Oct. 16 competition. “We felt good about what we were getting ready to perform.”

Quinton’s band performed music from “The Phantom of the Opera.” Adcock said, “It was the right choice of music for this group and the right drill design for them.”

Quinton’s ensemble also earned a I, as did soloist Shantel Brennan.

Wilburton’s marching band earned a II at the Southeast Regional, but its color guard earned a I. Ensemble performers Kalie Smith and Laurel Robbins earned a I, as did soloists Kelley Johnston and Sarenity Reynolds.

“The kids did way better than I expected them to do at the start of the year,” Wilburton band director Kyle Littlejohn said.

“We did a Michael Jackson show this year. The crowd loved the Michael Jackson show. ... Everybody loves ‘Thriller.’”

Soloist Christina Medcalf and ensemble performers Kacie Stanford and Derica Roberts earned a II.

Hartshorne’s marching band also competed at the Southeastern Regional. Hartshorne earned a rating of III in marching band, but it picked up a II in color guard.

Hartshorne also earned ratings of III from its ensemble trio and soloists Cheyenne Baldwin and Kassidy Battles. Soloist Naomi Christmas earned a II.

McAlester’s marching band competed at the OSSAA Eastern Regional on Wednesday at Broken Arrow. The Pride of McAlester earned a I and then competed in the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association state contest Saturday in Mustang.
